How to Store Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor cushions are tougher than regular indoor cushions but they still need to be looked after. If you know how to correctly store your outdoor cushions you can keep them looking newer for longer. How you store your cushions can also change throughout the seasons, in the Summer months you may leave them outside more.

As we move towards Autumn it is important to know the best way to store your cushions. Through Winter you won’t spend as much time in your garden but if you keep your furniture protected then, by the time Spring comes around, they’ll look as good as new!

All Bramblecrest garden furniture is supplied with season-proof cushions, but they recommend always storing your cushions away when you’re not using them, especially in inclement weather.

Even though there may be space underneath your patio furniture set, Bramblecrest advise against leaving your cushions there as storage because it's possible for them to still get damp, which can lead to mold and mildew.

Outdoor cushion storage tips

Storing your cushions can seem like a chore, as the larger your garden furniture set the more cushions you have. We have a few helpful tips to help you keep your cushions looking new over Winter. Every garden is prone to the occasional pest, such as mice, it’s important to consider this when choosing where to store your cushions.

Wash and dry your cushions:

If you’re going to be storing your cushions for a long time the first thing you should do is wash them. Throughout Summer they might have gotten a little dirty we recommend that you give them a light cleaning, then when you take them out again they’ll look new still. First, you should brush off any visible dirt then make sure to read the manufacturer’s care instructions.

We advise against machine washing your cushions as, over time, it will start to remove the shower-proof coating. All you need to do is use hot soapy water and a sponge to remove any stains. Once you have finished cleaning, make sure that the cushions have dried through completely. This is important because if you store them away when they’re damp it could lead to mould and mildew growing on them.

Choosing the right place to store your cushions:

If you’re putting your cushions away for a long period of time you want to know they won’t get harmed, this could be done by animals or by leaving them somewhere damp. It’s essential to pick somewhere dry, ideally, you want somewhere that keeps a consistent temperature. Of course, this can be challenging.

If you store them in a garage or a shed try to keep them off the ground. This is because the ground can hold moisture which could damage your cushions. Another reason to keep them off the ground is that it makes it harder for pests to get to them.

Garden cushion boxes and cushion bags:

If you don’t have anywhere suitable to store your cushions, don’t worry! We do stock cushion boxes and cushion bags which are designed for storing garden cushions. The Bramblecrest Monterey range offers a standard cushion box and a large cushion box, both come in either Dove Grey or Sandstone. These boxes have a weatherproof liner, shown in the above image, to help protect your cushions even more. They’re made using all-weather rattan and built on an aluminium frame.

We have cushion bags from both AeroCover and Bramblecrest they’re great at prolonging the life of your cushions. The Bramblecrest cushion bags have mesh air vents which can stop mould and mildew from developing due to trapped moisture. It is made using a tear-resistant and water-repellent fabric. Whilst AeroCover uses a breathable water-resistant fabric to reduce condensation and prevent mould.

If you want your cushions to stay looking nice and new then you just need to follow those simple tips. The most important thing is to keep your garden cushions somewhere clean and dry. In the Summer months, your cushions can stay outside underneath a cover but once it gets a bit colder and damper we advise that you follow our recommendations.
